Camping with Dogs: 5 Tricks You Should Know

Camping with your four-legged companion can be a load of fun, and it's something that both of you can enjoy together. From exploring new trails to being able to take in the abundance of fresh air around, it can be an enjoyable, memory-filled adventure. If you're planning on or want to go camping with your canine companion soon, here are five tricks you should know so you can have an amazing trip.

Plan Before Your Trip

Before your trip, you want to ensure you have everything planned so your trip can go smoothly.

You can plan ahead by:

  • Researching pet-friendly camping grounds like Tentrr
  • Taking your dog to the vet to keep him up to date on his shots
  • Reserving your camping spot early to ensure you have a spot
  • Planning break times for your dog on the way to the camping site
  • Making sure your dog has undergone obedience training
  • Getting high-quality pet gear (harness, collars, leash, etc.)

Some apps can also help prepare your dog for the trip. A couple of popular ones include:

  • Vetster
  • Chewy
  • American Red Cross Pet First Aid
  • Puppr, GoodPup
Camping with Dogs: 5 Tricks You Should Know

Some people believe that camping and hiking are just for the big dogs. However, this isn’t true! In reality, many small dogs love camping like the Jack Terrier Russel and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. These little ones are incredibly energetic, and the outdoors is one of their favorite places due to their background in herding cattle and fox hunting.

While these little guys enjoy the outdoors, you should do a little more research on the right trails and hikes to go on that won’t be too difficult for them if you’re planning on doing activities like that.

Train, Train, Train!

Another big step is ensuring you and your dog are physically fit and ready for the journey.

You want to work yourself up the ladder of advancement by taking small steps such as:

  • Taking longer walks
  • Going outdoors more often (If you haven’t already)
  • Socializing your dogs with other dogs, people, and animals
  • Having a little backyard campout

Actions like these will make it easier for your dog to be able to make it traveling through the wild. However, don’t forget that breaks are just as important as physical fitness. Train yourself to look at your dog’s behavior and know when they need a break during the trip.

Your dog may need a break if you notice:

  • Differences in breathing or moving
  • A loss of self-control
  • Over-excitation
  • A lot of yawning
  • Inattentiveness to commands
  • Constantly trying to lie down
  • A loss of interest in his surroundings

Bring Lots Of Food And Water

Proper nutrition and hydration are fundamental in making it through a camping trip. Therefore you should ensure you bring your dog’s food, lots of water, and treats to make your dog as comfortable as you can before, during, and after the journey. Collapsable dog bowls and leak-proof dog bowl water bottles will be a great addition to the things you should bring with your dogs.

Pack Protection From The Elements

When going out into different temperatures and weather conditions, it’s important to pack protection!

Jackets, coats, and tarps will be important go-to’s for you and your dog during rainy, windy, or cold weather. However, during the extreme heat, you may need a cooling vest for your canine companion to keep them cool. You should also invest in dog booties to protect your dog’s precious paws from the cold or hot rocky terrain they may have to travel. For dogs who don’t like booties look into paw waxes to keep their paws conditioned and protected.

Leave No Trace Behind

Leaving no trace behind essentially means leaving nature the way you found it, which is extremely important when camping.

Ways that you can leave no trace include:

  • Safely putting out any fires you start
  • Picking up all trash you use during your trip
  • Picking up all of your dog’s poop
  • Preventing your dog from disturbing the wildlife around him (not chasing animals, no loud barking, etc.)

Camping Checklist: What Should You Bring:

Here are some of the most important things you should bring with your dog on your trip:

  • Food
  • Water
  • Treats
  • Collapsible dog bowl
  • Leak-proof water bottles
  • First aid kits
  • Bags for doggie poop
  • Toys
  • Paw protection
  • Jackets, sleeping bags, and tarps
  • Grooming wipes

Camping with your dog can be a memory-filled, bonding experience between you and your dog. These five important tricks you should know before camping with your dog will help make your trip 10x more simple.

There’s so much more to do when camping in Pennsylvania than just hiking, fishing, and hunting. Pennsylvania is also home to a huge number of outdoor festivals that make the experience of camping in this beautiful state lively and fun. Everything from fall festivals to live entertainment and live music, to quilt shows and the Pocono Raceway, there’s something for everyone.

Ameriserv Flood City Music Festival

In a park that has a view of Stone Bridge, commemorating the 1889 Johnstown flood, now covered with bright and festive animated LED lights, the Ameriserv Flood City Music Festival is always packed with live music for the two days it runs. Traditionally held in July, this festival has headlined artists like the Spin Doctors, Billy Price, the Gin Blossoms, Sugar Ray, and many many more over its more than 20 year history.

Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival

The Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival is held twice a year, once in May and once in August, so the organizers can cram in as much live entertainment as possible. Each festival lasts for three days and brings in the best names in bluegrass.

But the best news is that this festival partners with Granite Hill Camping Resort so that you can get a 4-day pass to the festival and up to 7 nights camping in the beautiful Pennsylvania countryside. More a camping resort than a traditional camp, Granite Hill has pools, golf, and cafes for visitors.

Philadelphia Folk Festival

Don’t let the name Philadelphia trick you into thinking this is in the heart of the city. This folk festival is located in the beautiful Upper Salford Township at the Old Pool Farm. Camping is available at the farm, and even though the festival is in August, the location has artists coming in every week all summer long. So if you can’t make the August 18-21 dates, you can still camp and see some amazing folk artists throughout the summer months.

Citadel Country Spirit

If you’re not into bluegrass or folk but want good solid country, then the Citadel Country Spirit festival is for you. Located at Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Grounds, Glenmore, PA (just off the PA turnpike), this festival was sadly canceled this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. But it is an institution and will be back next year better than ever.

Night Lights Sky Lantern Festival in Pennsylvania

Want to experience the awe-inspiring joy that we saw in Disney’s Tangled? Those enormous candle-powered paper lanterns actually exist, and the Night Lights Sky Lantern Festival will bring out the child-like wonder in you when you see all the lights rise to heaven. Located at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, PA, you can get your fill of delicious food, live music, face painters, and balloon artists. Then, when the sun goes down, you’ll watch thousands of paper lanterns float up into the sky.

Maple Festival in Pennsylvania

Camping is available at this festival. You might call it a sugar camp. Located in Meyersdale, PA, this is a festival dedicated to maple syrup production, and it goes all-out. Crowning a Maple Queen and Maple King are only the beginning of the treats to be experienced at this sweet festival.

Lions Pancakes and Sausage are a must, but the festival park has everything maple flavored you could ever want. You can tour syrup production facilities or just enjoy the show.

Shofuso Cherry Blossom Festival in Pennsylvania

A celebration of Japanese and African American cultures, this is one festival that you’re going to have to trek into Philadelphia to experience, but we promise it’s worth it. You won’t even realize you’re in the city when you’re immersed in Fairmount Park with the forest of Japanese cherry trees.

The park was a gift to Americans from the people of Japan in 1926 to mark the nation’s 150 year anniversary. Visit the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center, watch the taiko drumming, and listen to the multicultural musical performances.

Overnight camping in Pennsylvania is one of the best opportunities to get back to nature, and you might be surprised that you can get off of I-81 and be in the forest wilderness in minutes. It’s truly a haven away from traffic and noise, and you can have a lovely, rustic time in what seems like the backwoods but is only minutes from the road.

I-81 camping is among the best tent camping in Pennsylvania, and you’ll find State Parks; modern and rustic cabins; deluxe cottages and yurts; campsites for tents, cottages, and RVs; and group sites.

Where Is Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania?

Interstate 81 (I-81) is a north-south highway that runs from Dandridge, Tennessee, to Fisher’s Landing, New York (at the Canadian border). The section that runs through Pennsylvania runs 232 miles starting near Greencastle and exiting near Hallstead. It has been dubbed the American Legion Memorial Highway.

How do I find camping locations?

You can find Pennsylvania Camping Near Me by using the Tentrr Search Nearby tool. Zoom into any place on the map, all across the United States, and you will be shown the Tentrr sites that have been setup and are waiting for you to form wonderful memories. You can find that map here.

Glamping Sites Along Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania, from North to South

In between the towns of Harford and Gibson, you’ll find two beautiful, secluded campsites.

Hannah’s Haven Campsite 3

Located between two streams, you’ll be camping in the backcountry in endless pear orchards of many varieties: Olympic Giants, Hosui, Bartlett, 21st Century and more. The owners of this land are committed to zero energy and a negative carbon footprint.

The campsite is a short walk from the parking area, downhill to a rugged, majestic spot alongside a stream. With an escarpment on one side and a mountain on the other, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped out of the hustle and bustle of Pennsylvania and back in time to a simpler age.

Hannah’s Haven Campsite 2

A little further to the east, you’ll find more of the great pear orchards and more of the simple and breathtaking seclusion of this wonderful landscape. You can truly get away from it all, detach from city life, turn off your phone, and simply enjoy nature in all its beauty.

Each campsite has a Big Horn 47” Wood Burning Ranch Fire Pit, and a picnic table. And everywhere you look there’s the opportunity for adventure.

Endless Mountain Escape at Camp Bluestone

Taking a longer detour from I-81, you’ll find yourself near Thompson, PA, at the highest point in Ararat. The mountain views are gorgeous, and you have all the conveniences you’d expect from a glamping adventure. Everything is included at this mountaintop camp, including canvas tent, queen bed with memory foam mattress, propane heater–and of course the fire pit, picnic tables and campfire grill.

All you need to bring to this adventurous locale is yourself and your food, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Slippery Creek Farm

Further south, near the town of Orwigsburg, PA, you’ll be camping in the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch culture. From the hill where your glamping site is located, you’ll be overlooking the orderly beauty of a Christmas tree farm. There’s so much to do, from hiking and bike trails to swimming and kayaking in the private pond. You can even visit the farmhouse to say hello to the horses.

On day excursions, you can tour coal mines, and see Yuengling, America’s oldest brewery. There's farmers market, and great birdwatching.

A PA Dutch Dromijn - Coleman Cooking Site

Just a few more minutes down the road to the southwest and you’ll be in the Pennsylvania Dutch hills. You’ll be camping on a farm that has been passed down from generations of Pennsylvania Dutch to the youngest member of the family, who has been working this land all his life.

Especially good for stargazing, bring a telescope and you’ll be far enough away from light pollution that you can enjoy a starry wonderland every night. Hike, fish, and enjoy the fireflies in this quant and unforgettable camp.

And That’s Just the Start!

We haven’t made it through half the state yet. Hop on our camp finder map to discover where you could be camping alongside Pennsylvania’s I-81. See all the wonders hiding in the Allegheny National Forest, the Pocono Mountains, the many state parks and state forests, and the Appalachian Trail. Outdoor activities abound with miles of hiking trails beside these luxurious tent sites.

It was 17 years ago that high school sweethearts, Scott and Christina Dietrich, found their dream property in the Poconos. While they were looking for something a bit smaller, the 425 acres of primitive forest in Jim Thorpe, PA, would soon become their retreat to get away from the day-to-day stresses. They also knew that their property - which is home to several stunning waterfalls - was special enough to share.

About five years ago, the Dietrichs launched their first Tentrr campsite: A Creek Runs Through It. They enhanced it over and over again, and within a year, they had added a second Tentrr site, Retreat on Bear Creek. A year after that came Bear Creek Falls Getaway and a fourth site, Bear Creek Hideaway in the Poconos, will open soon. Their property, Camp Dietrich on Bear Creek Falls, has become a popular camping destination that is accessible from New York City and the surrounding metro area.

“What we try to do is make the experience the best it can be,” says Scott. “We know that our natural resource - our property - is magical, but we want to make camping easy for everyone. It’s rustic, but it needs to be comfortable.” The Dietrichs have something called “Checkpoint Shed,” a place where campers can find loads of extra camping gear.

We recently sat down with the Dietrichs to learn a bit more about their backgrounds and their hosting experience.

Was camping a part of your childhood? Who first introduced you to camping?

Scott camped with his family in the Poconos and later with the boy scouts. Christina was introduced to camping through the girl scouts. When raising our four sons, camping became our standard vacation. We traveled throughout the country, first with a tent and then a pop-up trailer.

Can you tell us a little about Jim Thorpe, PA, and about the property where your Tentrr sites are located?

Nicknamed “Little Switzerland,” Jim Thorpe is rich in history and activities; it consistently garners high ratings in travel news and offers a great weekend escape for residents of Philadelphia (90 mins) and New York City (2 hrs). The area has endless outdoor activities - hiking, whitewater rafting, biking (over 40 miles of rails-to-trails bike paths), and 700+ acres of skirmish paintball. Campers can also enjoy a variety of local tours (coal mine tour, jail tour, trolley wine tour, train tour, sidecar tour, ghost tour, Packer mansion tour - Disney’s haunted mansion was fashioned after this home.) Wonderful restaurants and quaint shops line the streets of the quaint downtown. There are also two state parks close by, Lehigh Gorge State Park (which adjoins our property) and Hickory Run State Park.

Our campers can enjoy all that Jim Thorpe offers or just enjoy hanging out at the campsites. On our property, they can hike several miles of trails, soak in one of the many “swimming holes”  and take in beautiful vistas. Along our creek, old-growth hemlocks can be found, and, starting in mid-June until early July, the mountain laurel and rhododendron add beautiful color to our forested acreage.

We are an approved forest steward and recently became enrolled in the US Forest “Family Forest Carbon Program." We are taking responsibility for protecting our environment to heart.

Now that you have multiple Tentrr sites on the property, are you seeing more groups visit the property?

From our many camping adventures, we understand and strive to offer comfortable, clean, and well-equipped campsites. The campsites are spread out, private, and are all along Bear Creek.  “Camping made easy” is what we provide in a very natural way. Many of our guests have returned and also recommended us to friends and family. We are very proud when this word-of-mouth occurs!

When we started with Tentrr, as recent retirees, we hoped that sharing our property would be a popular choice for others, we wanted to share our appreciation of the outdoors. Now after several seasons, we can see it happening. Reservations for two or more sites is becoming more frequent. The majority of campers who reserve multiple sites are family groups.

Camp Host Profile: The Dietrichs

What is one of your favorite camper stories?

Friendships have been made, and we too have great memories. Some of our campers are well experienced and for others, it is a first. One special memory I have is of a seven-year-old who was camping with his family.  He had some major medical issues. He was adamant that he wanted to be a hunter and fisherman. He persistently tried fishing from one spot to the next.  I asked him how it was going, and his face told me not well. I gave him a new fly to try and soon he had caught his first fish!  I hope he catches many more in years to come.

NEW YORK & LOS ANGELES - Tentrr, a leader in ready-to-go camping accommodations with over a thousand fully-equipped campsites across the USA, announced a first-of-its-kind partnership with Sensible Weather, a climate risk technology company. While Tentrr sites are built on above-ground platforms with 100% rain-proof canvas wall tents and memory foam mattresses, we all know that rain can dampen daytime fun in the great outdoors.

As part of the partnership, Tentrr campers can now protect their outdoor experiences by adding Sensible’s Weather Guarantee coverage to bookings at over 1,200 Tentrr campsites. Weather Guarantees automatically reimburse campers when rain impacts their stay at a Tentrr site.

“The number one reason campers are hesitant to commit to a camping trip is the possibility of rain. Our partnership with Sensible Weather eliminates this concern and further enhances Tentrr’s unique outdoor experience for our campers," said Todd King, Vice President of Marketing at Tentrr. “While we can’t control the weather, we can now make a Tentrr camping trip even more enjoyable by offering automatic reimbursement for any reservation impacted by rain.”

Sensible Weather uses sophisticated climate data models to determine the chance of rain during a stay at a Tentrr site.  During the booking process on Tentrr.com, the guest is offered the option to purchase the “Rain Guarantee” at checkout for their campsite reservations. The price for this guarantee is a nominal percentage of the nightly rate. Once selected, if rain is forecasted to occur during a covered Tentrr reservation, Sensible Weather automatically texts the camper a link to easily collect their reimbursement each morning of their trip. Rain Guarantee payments are processed immediately, with payouts based on the number of hours the experience is negatively impacted by weather. For example, Sensible recently paid a Tentrr camper 100% reimbursement on their daily Tentrr rate for rain on a March camping trip at Clarkco State Park in Mississippi.

“With climate increasingly impacting vacations and outdoor experiences, Sensible’s Weather Guarantee service offers Tentrr campers peace of mind when booking reservations online. Campers who opt to purchase a Weather Guarantee with their Tentrr bookings know they’ll be able to recoup their reservation costs when a few hours of unwanted rain interferes with their outdoor plans,” said Nick Cavanaugh, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Sensible Weather. “Our embedded fintech service helps Tentrr increase conversion rates and ancillary revenues, while at the same time decreasing last-minute cancellations and enhancing their guest experience.”

Tentrr is launching the Rain Guarantee across its growing portfolio of fully-equipped campsites on beautiful public and private land.

Rain Guarantee reimbursements are based on the nightly rate, the amount of rainfall and length of rainfall. Based on the amount of rain, campers can expect a percentage of their nightly rate (or potentially the full rate) to be reimbursed.

What about CampKeepers (Tentrr hosts)?
Once a camper opts in for the Rain Guarantee, the Tentrr host gets paid for the reservation, rain or shine. The Tentrr host does not have to do anything as the Rain Guarantee reimburses the camper separately with no refunds or credits on your behalf. Win/Win for everyone!

Ready for a family camping trip in Mississippi? If you have kids, these destinations are sure to delight.

Unplugging and escaping into nature is beneficial for the soul. When you have small children, going on a nature-filled camping trip can form some very important and therapeutic memories for the entire family. Fortunately, Mississippi has several gorgeous natural sites that are ideal for getting into the great outdoors.

Tentrr makes the process of finding the right kid-friendly campsites so much easier! We have recently opened campsites at eight state parks in Mississippi. Our featured camping sites are especially well-suited for families because they combine the fun of camping and nature with park amenities aimed at kids.

Each of Tentrr’s single campsites can accommodate up to six campers, complete with a platform safari tent and a pop-up tent. Some of our parks also offer double sites which have two platform tents and two pop-up tents with the ability to house up to twelve campers. These sites are great for larger groups of friends or family gatherings. Most of Tentrr's roomy campsites are also dog-friendly.

Let’s take a look at a few of our favorite Tentrr camping destinations in the Magnolia State that are ideal for families with children.

LeFleur’s Bluff State Park

The Best Family Camping Destinations in Mississippi
Site C - Overlooks Mayes Lake at Lefleur's Bluff State Park

Top Features of LeFleur’s Bluff State Park:

  • Perfect for weekend trips - located near the Eastover neighborhood in Jackson
  • Family-friendly - combine camping with visits to kid-friendly museums
  • Home to the largest playground in the state of Mississippi (just opened in December of 2021)
  • Two museums right on the park grounds: the Mississippi Children’s Museum and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science
  • Access to Maye's Lake with a beach, fishing, and watersports
  • Ready-to-camp Safari tents - most are pet-friendly
  • Big kids can stay in the pop-up tent - little ones can sleep next to mom and dad in the Safari tent
  • Great for first-time campers!

Looking for a quick family getaway in central Mississippi? Located near the Eastover neighborhood in Jackson, LeFleur's Bluff State Park is a fantastic site to visit. Exploring the park's various nature paths, which take you through forested cliffs, river bottoms, lakes, and picturesque swamplands, is one of the attractions. Remember to bring your camera! There's also a terrific disc golf course, boating, fishing, and, of course, the opportunity to enjoy Mississippi-style barbecue and picnics. Don't forget the spicy sauce! Enjoy a campfire at the end of the day while watching the sunset over the lake with a cold drink in hand. Tentrr campsites feature firepits with a grill top and private picnic tables for your family. We highly encourage you to take advantage of the fishing possibilities, hiking paths, and other exciting things that this state park retreat has to offer while you're here. Anglers may catch bass, bream, catfish, and crappie at Mayes Lake. Please note that all Mississippi residents between the ages of 16 and 65 must have a fishing license. For a small price, licenses may be acquired at the park office.

What is the history behind this 305-acre beautiful green oasis? Louis LeFleur, a French-Canadian adventurer who built a trading station on the banks of the Pearl River in the late 1700s, is the park's namesake. "LeFleur's Bluff" was the initial name for the city of Jackson. Mississippi's dynamic capital city now mixes the warmth and beauty of its rich cultural past with interesting activities and attractions, as well as modern lifestyles. And, if you're a music lover, the Tentrr sites at LeFleur's Bluff are less than a 1/2 hour drive to Brandon Amphitheater.

Tentrr campers have access to a park bathroom with hot showers in the developed camping area (not at the Tentrr sites). Advance bookings are required for all campsites. There are also seven picnic pavilions in the park that may be reserved.

Buccaneer State Park

The Best Family Camping Destinations in Mississippi

Top Features of Buccaneer State Park:

  • Located along the Gulf of Mexico in Waveland, Mississippi
  • Within an hour of Gulfport, Biloxi, and New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Families can enjoy the Gulf Beach and Buccaneer Bay Waterpark
  • Pirate’s Alley Nature Trail
  • A family-friendly playground and good biking options
  • Ready-to-go Campsites with Safari tents by Tentrr

Buccaneer State Park, on the beach near Waveland, is surrounded by giant moss-draped oaks, marshlands, and the Gulf of Mexico. Andrew Jackson utilized the park location, also known as Jackson's Ridge, as a base of military operations during the Battle of New Orleans. Later, Jackson returned to the region and erected a home on what is now Buccaneer State Park's grounds.

Pirate's Alley Nature Trail is one of the most family-friendly elements of this state park. This 1.8-mile self-guided walk has a variety of oak types, Sweet Bay Magnolias, and other Mississippi Gulf Coast native flora. Visitors may see a variety of aquatic birds and crustaceans from a pier and gazebo that extends over Mud Bayou's canal.

The Best Family Camping Destinations in Mississippi

Buccaneer Bay Waterpark, open Memorial Day through Labor Day, is a big draw for families visiting this park. It features two large waterslides, Pirate's Lagoon wave pool, a large surf pool, and a water playground with bubbler and tipping buckets for younger children. There is a separate entrance fee for the waterpark.

And, last but certainly not least, your family can explore the park's white sand beach - a great place to build a sandcastle or wade in the ocean to cool off on a hot day. There is minimal surf at this beach making it an ideal spot for younger children to splash about with supervision.

If you want your family to experience the great outdoors with wonderful natural views, beachfront access and waterpark entertainment consider Tentrr's ready-to-go campsites at Buccaneer State Park.

Meet Hall Smyth, a CampKeeper who runs two Tentrr campsites with the help of his son. We sat down with Hall to chat about his experience with Tentrr. It’s our CampKeepers who allow us to bring our campers top quality campsites, and we are grateful to them all!

How did you first learn about Tentrr, and what motivated you to install a campsite?
We were very early in the process. We knew the people who started Tentrr. As a result, our site has been running for a very long time. I understood that the concept is to experience interesting properties. And I certainly have access to an interesting property! So for me, it was about using what we already have.

Can you tell us a little about each of your campsites?
I have three campsites on the Delaware River, right where New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania meet: River’s Edge Sunrise, River's Edge Sunset and River's Edge On The Canal.

Camp Host Profile: Hall Smyth

How did you decide on the campsite location?
We chose the locations based on which ones had the most spectacular view and setting. We also looked at it from an experience standpoint of what you can do and get out of the location.

What about your property do you like sharing with campers?
The number one thing I love sharing with campers is at River’s Edge we have a fisherman’s camp where they fish for eel, particularly in the fall. It’s a really beautiful thing. Campers get to interact with the fishermen and see how it works.

Tell us a little about how you ended up here and what you do?
I’ve been on the property for 25 years. When I moved up here I was a graphic designer/an exhibition designer in the city. Now I repurpose wood. That came about because I discovered a lot of buildings that were dilapidated or demolished. And initially I started requiring wood for my own uses. But I acquired more and more and more until it became a full fledged business.

What is your favorite thing about being a CampKeeper?
Surprisingly, the interaction. I think that campers who enjoy their trip the most are the ones that I say hello to, tell them about local spots, and get them out in the community. A lot of people will come to camp and think they’ll only stay around the campsite, and I think the best experiences are when they get out and see the town.

What kind of experience do you want to provide for the camper?
I want the camper to have a nice relaxing time outside the city. Most of the campers come from urban areas. I want to provide something better than just going to a campground.

What is one thing that surprised you about being CampKeeper?
The biggest surprise has been how popular it has been. We are hosting campers constantly.

Camp Host Profile: Hall Smyth

What is one of your favorite camper stories?
One of the things we offer at River’s Edge is the canoeing trip. I picked up some campers, took them up the river, and dropped them off. I expected them back in a few hours. I came to the campsite many hours later just to make sure they arrived safely, but they weren’t there. I didn’t think too much of it; I thought they were just having fun. I went to a river restaurant they were hanging out at earlier asked if the waitress had seen them, and she said they were out doing something. So I went looking for them again once it was almost dark. I drove up and down the road looking for them. Finally I found them at a neighbors house. They were on the back porch having drinks. I love that story, because they really embraced the concept of the river, which is to not just ride down the river but to stop along the way.

What do you think it takes to be a good CampKeeper?
I think one of the most important ways to be a good CampKeeper is to be diligent about maintaining your campsite. There are little things that can be added all the time. They don’t have to be difficult to improve your campsite, things like adding the perfect little lantern, or one thing we added is a fitted sheet and flannel cover for the mattress.

Do you find that campers are respectful of your land and your property?
I’ve found that campers are incredibly respectful. We've entertained thousands of campers and only one was an issue.
