If you were to run your fingers over the topography of North Carolina left to right, it would feel like one long, slow descent into the sea. The western third of the state spikes high into the sky with the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, plunging eastward into the Piedmont Plateau, which eventually leads to those legendary Outer Banks.

With all that varied terrain, it’s not surprising that camping in the Tar Heel state offers a little taste of everything – from brilliant fall foliage to snow-peaked mountains and impossibly sunny beaches.
