THE HORROR, THE HORROR
A Pair Of Movie Directors Who Think Going To The Movies Is 'Elitist,' And More Of This Week's 'One Main Character'
Every day somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on Twitter from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.
Each day on twitter there is one main character. The goal is to never be it

This week's characters include New York City’s very fashionable(?) mayor, an iconic musician being unnecessarily rude about fan art, a pair of movie directors who think going to the movies is “elitist” and a horror fan who can’t think of more than one horror director.
Saturday
Eric Adams
The character: Eric Adams, New York Mayor, fashion icon, pop culture enthusiast
The plot: There is never a dull moment in Eric Adams’s life. The Mayor of New York was made for the occasion. Last week he showed up to work wearing a rather fly white shirt.
We’re not going to allow anyone to pick New Yorkers’ pockets – not on the street, not at a used car dealership.

Today, I was joined by Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga to announce a $304,900 settlement for consumers who were ripped off by Mitsubishi and Brooklyn Volkswagen. pic.twitter.com/nyh50lXpPu
The repercussion: I’m unaware of what this specific style of shirt is called and I’m not going to be that guy and take shots at Adams’s saratorial choice. This one at least. Remember, when you’re the Mayor of New York you’re always the main character, and naturally Twitter had fun with Adams’s fit.

He’s very funny, not on purpose, but still, very funny

Why does Eric Adams look like he promised a low talker to wear the shirt she designed at a major public appearance pic.twitter.com/UjtNkWOfDf

Why he's dressed like he's about to test Neo's kung fu programming is anyone's guess.

Sunday
David Crosby
The character: David Crosby, singer-songwriter, founding member of Crosby, Stills & Nash, sperm donor, “Hook” co-star, art critic
The plot: On Saturday, a fan of Crosby, DJB Sackett, tweeted a portrait they had painted of him, saying, “Hi @thedavidcrosby hope you are keeping well. Did a picture of you…. Thanks for the music.”
Crosby quickly quote-tweeted the picture and gruffly replied, “That is the weirdest painting of me. I have ever seen …..don’t quit your day job.”
That is the weirdest painting of me. I have ever seen …..don’t quit your day job …… https://t.co/3USbW4Qt7a
— David Crosby (@thedavidcrosby) July 16, 2022
The repercussion: Crosby’s mean response to the fan’s artwork immediately drew backlash from netizens who thought that if the rocker didn’t have anything nice to say, he shouldn’t have said anything at all.
“This is the weirdest reaction to a fan trying to do something nice I have ever seen,” one person said.
This is the weirdest reaction to a fan trying to do something nice I have ever seen. …don’t quit your day job, David Crosby… but maybe stop being an unkind schmuck on Twitter https://t.co/Lmkt4MkLEe
— Gregory Anderson (@g_e_anderson) July 17, 2022
this is pretty disappointing from the guy who sang heart of gold
— eve 6 journalist (@Eve6) July 18, 2022
David Crosby heartlessly crushes an adoring fan who did a portrait of Crosby by telling the fan not to quit his day job. I'm thinking art contest. Do a Crosby portrait & send it his way. Make it fun. Be creative. You don't need to be an artist. In fact, it's better if you're not. https://t.co/98I6mjnkqe
— Troy Riser (@TroyRiser) July 17, 2022
David Crosby apparently doesn't realize that saying nothing is also an option. What a dick move. https://t.co/d785qv0WrU
— Mike Trozzo 👓😷 (@MikeTrozzo) July 17, 2022
Fan: Hi David Crosby. Hope you are well. I did this picture of you.

David Crosby getting roasted on Twitter is bringing me such joy today.
— Jennifer (@LiLa__lee18) July 17, 2022
Even “Wonder Woman” star Lynda Carter weighed in on Crosby’s mean tweet.
Life is too short to be mean to strangers online. Go outside and look at some trees.
— Lynda Carter (@RealLyndaCarter) July 17, 2022
Patricia Arquette took the high road, saying the artist’s portrait reminded her of “stained glass.”
It reminds me of stained glass. Nice work!
— Patricia Arquette (@PattyArquette) July 17, 2022
Despite the immense blowback, Crosby continued to double down in subsequent tweets.
Does not mean I have to like it ….as art I think it sucks https://t.co/iXXhvgYGBw
— David Crosby (@thedavidcrosby) July 16, 2022
He later acknowledged he shouldn’t have “dropped the ‘don’t quit your day job’” quip on him.
I just didn’t think it was any good …but I should not have dropped the “don’t quit your day job “ on him ….that was just being pissy ….which I sometimes am ….usually I’m fairly thoughtful https://t.co/kKT4B59vNC
— David Crosby (@thedavidcrosby) July 17, 2022
The artist took the rocker’s criticism in stride, giving an interview to Artnet, saying that while he was disappointed he didn’t like it, he still appreciated him as a musician.
“I was disappointed that he didn’t like it, as I had created it as a tribute to him. I’m such a fan of his music. But, of course, I couldn’t expect him to like it, and he is entitled to an opinion. I knew he had a reputation for being a somewhat prickly character, so I wasn’t too surprised at the tone of his reply. I still appreciate him as a musician. I’m proud of the painting.”
Thanks to @artnet & reporter @sarahecascone for approaching me for an interview to discuss my weird David Crosby painting, the reaction to it, and who inspired me to get into art #artnet #fanart #art@JANUSZCZAK @matthew51691936 @PeteMcKee @wmarybeardhttps://t.co/VOXckQ303g

James Crugnale
The Russo Brothers
The character: Joe and Anthony Russo, directors, writers, producers, Italians
The plot: In an interview on the press tour for their new Netflix film “The Gray Man,” Joe and Anthony Russo had some things to say about watching a movie at home or in a movie theater. Now, we don’t want to pick sides, these are some accomplished gentlemen with a fantastic last name, who worked on “Community” and “Arrested Development” and some of the biggest Marvel/Avengers films, AKA the highest grossing movies ever. Having a preference for one or the other shouldn’t divide us, as a people. There are disabled cinephiles who can’t go to a theater, and there are people who cannot afford it. Choosing the word “elitist”, though…
Netflix buddies the Russo Brothers declare going to the movie theater "an elitist notion" https://t.co/OgW45SfB8M pic.twitter.com/QawxUc96H3
— The A.V. Club (@TheAVClub) July 16, 2022
The repercussion: People had exceedingly strong reactions. There were a lot of good, measured responses from critics and whatnot, but honestly these rage tweets were the bulk of the responses. This story went into overdrive way too quickly.
@Russo_Brothers I love y’all as directors but come on now…there’s nothing like watching a movie in a movie theater. It’s not elitist, it’s tradition at this point. It gets people out the house to watch a film with a group of strangers who love film. It brings people together imo https://t.co/CNid9LEj6f

The Russo brothers are garbage. Movie theaters are now elitist?! Man, get fucked. https://t.co/d3H1hFh2xL pic.twitter.com/0B2AyU2nQd
— Daniel Carlson (@danielwcarlson) July 16, 2022
Love these guys from Community and Arrested Development, but this is just a bunch of nonsense. https://t.co/r8nzRCpX3Q
— Mark A. Altman (@markaaltman) July 17, 2022
Streaming is eletist you pretentious douchebags. Requires fast internet, smart TV, and almost always multiple subscription services, but still won't compare to a $7-15 theater experience unless you invest in a home theater sound system. 🤦♂️https://t.co/7bD4fduJN7
— Ben W (Russian bot) (@B_Dub3) July 20, 2022
I mean… early theatres were for poor people and the rich defamed movies as trash entertainment. Now they’re expensive, yeah, that’s true. But if you’re gonna be rad, why not also critique having dozens of monthly subscriptions as also elitist? https://t.co/q1nv9elPst

Wednesday
Adam Ellis
The character: Adam Ellis, comic book creator, tweeter of controversial opinions
The plot: On Wednesday, Adam Ellis tweeted a hot take: that Jordan Peele could be the greatest horror director of all time. That part isn’t too controversial, in my opinion — Jordan Peele is a genius — but what Ellis went on to say has caused a stir on Twitter.
“Can you think of another horror director that had 3 great films, let alone 3 in a row?” he wrote. “I can't.”
I know this is a hot take but at what point do we declare Jordan Peele the best horror director of all time? Can you think of another horror director that had 3 great films, let alone 3 in a row? I can't. pic.twitter.com/s67M40TZ7p
— Adam ElIis 𓁹𓂏𓁹 (@adamtotscomix) July 20, 2022
The repercussion: A flood of Twitter users have disputed Ellis’ bold claim that not a single other horror director in film history has produced three great movies — including Jordan Peele himself.
Sorry. I love your enthusiasm but, I will just not tolerate any John Carpenter slander!!! pic.twitter.com/71sVfXAu7S
— Jordan Peele (@JordanPeele) July 20, 2022
The filmmaker objected to being ranked higher than John Carpenter — the director behind horror classics like “Halloween,” “The Thing” and “Christine” — telling Ellis, “I love your enthusiasm, but I will just not tolerate any John Carpenter slander!!!”
Several people made similar arguments.
Excuse Me Sir, Do You Have a Moment to Talk About John Carpenter?
— Claus Maori (@khaallu) July 20, 2022
Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Craven, Friedkin, Carpenter, Cronenberg, Hooper, Zombie, De Palma, West, Haneke, Roth, Lynch
— kyle 中和 turner (@TyleKurner) July 20, 2022
In a row possibly, but carpenter, craven and Romero definitely have more than 3 great films.
— Joe Miera (@dedman13) July 20, 2022
come on man, off the top of my head: rami, carpenter, craven, cronenberg, romero, argento, hooper, wan, and noé. can also pretty much guarantee that aster, eggers, and ducournau will be there too in the next couple years.

There was a pretty great director named Born Before 1960, she made one called Watch More Movies, another one called Not In English, and a third one called History Is Longer Than Your Lifetime. You should check her out.

But in the end, no amount of frustrated tweets from horror movie fans is changing this guy’s stance.
I stand by all my bad opinions 😌
