A Pair Of Movie Directors Who Think Going To The Movies Is 'Elitist,' And More Of This Week's 'One Main Character'
This week, we've also got New York City's most fashionable mayor, a musician who does not want to see your fan art of him and a horror fan who can't think of more than one horror director.

Every day somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on Twitter from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.

This week's characters include New York City’s very fashionable(?) mayor, an iconic musician being unnecessarily rude about fan art, a pair of movie directors who think going to the movies is “elitist” and a horror fan who can’t think of more than one horror director.

Saturday

Eric Adams

The character: Eric Adams, New York Mayor, fashion icon, pop culture enthusiast

The plot: There is never a dull moment in Eric Adams’s life. The Mayor of New York was made for the occasion. Last week he showed up to work wearing a rather fly white shirt.

The repercussion: I’m unaware of what this specific style of shirt is called and I’m not going to be that guy and take shots at Adams’s saratorial choice. This one at least. Remember, when you’re the Mayor of New York you’re always the main character, and naturally Twitter had fun with Adams’s fit.

Sunday

David Crosby

The character: David Crosby, singer-songwriter, founding member of Crosby, Stills & Nash, sperm donor, “Hook” co-star, art critic

The plot: On Saturday, a fan of Crosby, DJB Sackett, tweeted a portrait they had painted of him, saying, “Hi @thedavidcrosby hope you are keeping well. Did a picture of you…. Thanks for the music.”

Crosby quickly quote-tweeted the picture and gruffly replied, “That is the weirdest painting of me. I have ever seen …..don’t quit your day job.”

The repercussion: Crosby’s mean response to the fan’s artwork immediately drew backlash from netizens who thought that if the rocker didn’t have anything nice to say, he shouldn’t have said anything at all.

“This is the weirdest reaction to a fan trying to do something nice I have ever seen,” one person said.

Even “Wonder Woman” star Lynda Carter weighed in on Crosby’s mean tweet.

Patricia Arquette took the high road, saying the artist’s portrait reminded her of “stained glass.”

Despite the immense blowback, Crosby continued to double down in subsequent tweets.

He later acknowledged he shouldn’t have “dropped the ‘don’t quit your day job’” quip on him.

The artist took the rocker’s criticism in stride, giving an interview to Artnet, saying that while he was disappointed he didn’t like it, he still appreciated him as a musician.

“I was disappointed that he didn’t like it, as I had created it as a tribute to him. I’m such a fan of his music. But, of course, I couldn’t expect him to like it, and he is entitled to an opinion. I knew he had a reputation for being a somewhat prickly character, so I wasn’t too surprised at the tone of his reply. I still appreciate him as a musician. I’m proud of the painting.”

James Crugnale

The Russo Brothers

The character: Joe and Anthony Russo, directors, writers, producers, Italians

The plot: In an interview on the press tour for their new Netflix film “The Gray Man,” Joe and Anthony Russo had some things to say about watching a movie at home or in a movie theater. Now, we don’t want to pick sides, these are some accomplished gentlemen with a fantastic last name, who worked on “Community” and “Arrested Development” and some of the biggest Marvel/Avengers films, AKA the highest grossing movies ever. Having a preference for one or the other shouldn’t divide us, as a people. There are disabled cinephiles who can’t go to a theater, and there are people who cannot afford it. Choosing the word “elitist”, though…

The repercussion: People had exceedingly strong reactions. There were a lot of good, measured responses from critics and whatnot, but honestly these rage tweets were the bulk of the responses. This story went into overdrive way too quickly.

Jared Russo (no relation)

Wednesday

Adam Ellis

The character: Adam Ellis, comic book creator, tweeter of controversial opinions

The plot: On Wednesday, Adam Ellis tweeted a hot take: that Jordan Peele could be the greatest horror director of all time. That part isn’t too controversial, in my opinion — Jordan Peele is a genius — but what Ellis went on to say has caused a stir on Twitter.

“Can you think of another horror director that had 3 great films, let alone 3 in a row?” he wrote. “I can't.”

The repercussion: A flood of Twitter users have disputed Ellis’ bold claim that not a single other horror director in film history has produced three great movies — including Jordan Peele himself.

The filmmaker objected to being ranked higher than John Carpenter — the director behind horror classics like “Halloween,” “The Thing” and “Christine” — telling Ellis, “I love your enthusiasm, but I will just not tolerate any John Carpenter slander!!!”

Several people made similar arguments.

Others just made fun of him.

But in the end, no amount of frustrated tweets from horror movie fans is changing this guy’s stance.
